About ICML XXI
Since its first edition in 1980, the International Conference on Minority Languages (ICML) has been one of the leading international forums for researchers working on minority languages in contexts such as linguistics, education, media and legislation. In 2027, the ICML will be held for the first time in South Tyrol, Italy. With its own rich linguistic diversity, South Tyrol offers an ideal setting for international exchanges on minority languages.
The 2027 edition will be organised by Eurac Research, in particular by three of its departments: the Center for Autonomy Experience, the Institute for Minority Rights and the Institute for Applied Linguistics.
The conference is aimed at academics, practitioners and policymakers, with a particular focus on multilingualism and interdisciplinary dialogue.
This is a preliminary list of topics (titles not final) that the conference will cover:
Linguistic vitality and minority languages
Education in and for minority languages
Media and minority languages
Language legislation in the context of autonomy and minority rights
Minority languages and social cohesion
Minority languages in the age of artificial intelligence and new technologies
Contested languages
Further information on the call for papers, programme and registration will be available soon.

Center for Autonomy Experience
The Center for Autonomy Experience is a research and contact hub for activities and initiatives related to South Tyrol's autonomy and minority protection system, which is our main research focus. Our research also looks at the history of autonomies and minorities, minority language media and the topic of minorities, gender, diversity and intersectionality.

Institute for Minority Rights
The Institute for Minority Rights is a research institute with an interdisciplinary expertise on ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. We generate and advance knowledge in the field of minority studies and diversity governance by offering innovative perspectives on societal challenges and addressing inequalities within increasingly diverse societies.

Institute for Applied Linguistics
The Institute for Applied Linguistics combines expertise in translation, terminology and language technologies with research on minority/minoritised languages, language competences and language policies. We support academia and institutions via research, consulting and dissemination to address the challenges and affordances of increasingly multilingual societies.
